I was surprised by how unpolished Victoria Legrand's singing is on it. It's rougher, more discordant, and more disjointed. I think the different thing about "Thank Your Lucky Stars" is that it sounds like Beach House's take on making a rock-and-roll album, although that really only applies to maybe half the songs. It's not a companion album, but I can't help but think of "Depression Cherry" as the "big" landmark album, carefully put together with awareness of high expectations, and "Thank Your Lucky Stars" as the "small", more casual album where a band just plays and maybe tries some different things out: a kind of pairing like "Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa", or "Some Girls" and "Emotional Rescue", or "Purple Rain" and "Around the World in a Day". ![]()
